Let’s be honest — an iPhone that won’t charge is enough to ruin your day. One minute you’re checking messages, the next you’re staring at 1% and hoping for a miracle. Before you assume the battery’s finished or rush out for a repair, there are a few simple things worth trying. We see this issue daily, and in many cases, the fix is quicker than you’d think.
Here’s the thing: charging problems are often caused by something small, not a major fault.
1. Check the Charging Cable (Yes, Really)
This sounds obvious, but damaged cables are the number one culprit. Even if the cable “looks fine”, internal wires can fray after months of bending and twisting. Try a different Apple-certified cable and plug.
If your phone starts charging straight away, congratulations — you’ve just saved yourself a repair visit. That spare cable in the drawer finally earned its keep.
2. Clean the Charging Port
Your iPhone lives in pockets, bags, and car cup holders. Over time, lint and dust pack themselves tightly into the charging port. The cable might connect, but not fully.
Grab a wooden toothpick or a soft brush and gently clear out the port. Don’t use metal. Ever. You’d be surprised how much fluff comes out of there.
We clean dozens of ports every month, and more often than not, the phone starts charging immediately.
3. Try a Different Power Source
Sometimes the problem isn’t the phone at all. Wall plugs fail. USB ports in cars and laptops can be weak or inconsistent.
Plug your charger into a different wall socket or use a mains adapter instead of a laptop. If it charges normally, the mystery is solved — and your iPhone is off the hook.
That extra battery might just get you from a full day in Shoreditch back to Wimbledon without the low-power panic.
4. Restart Your iPhone
A software glitch can stop charging altogether. It’s rare, but it happens.
Restart your iPhone properly, not just a quick lock and unlock. Once it’s back on, plug it in again and give it a minute. Sometimes the system just needs a reset to remember how charging works.
Short fix. Big relief.
5. Check for Overheating or Moisture
If your iPhone is too hot or detects moisture in the port, it will stop charging to protect itself. This is a built-in safety feature.
Let the phone cool down, keep it dry, and wait 20–30 minutes before trying again. Avoid hairdryers or heaters — patience works better.
When to Bring It In
If none of these steps work, it’s likely a worn charging port, battery issue, or internal fault. At that point, forcing it won’t help.
The good news? Charging problems are usually straightforward to diagnose, and in many cases, they’re fixable without replacing the whole phone.
Try these five steps first. If your iPhone still refuses to charge, that’s when it’s time to let a professional take a look — and get you powered up properly again.
