How to Tell If an iPhone Screen Is Original or a Copy (5 Checks)

Aug 20, 2019

Just had your iPhone screen replaced and not sure if it’s actually genuine? You’re right to ask. Plenty of high-street and back-room repair shops fit copy LCDs in place of the original Apple display — pocket the difference, and most customers never notice for weeks. Then the touch starts ghosting, the colours look off, or the brightness can’t keep up in sunlight.

The good news: there are five quick checks you can run on your own iPhone right now, before you leave the shop, that will tell you almost certainly whether the screen you’ve been given is original (Apple OEM) or a copy. No tools needed, no settings menus, no apps — just your eyes and a few minutes.

How to Check If Your iPhone Screen Replacement Is Original — 5 Tests

1. The True Tone Test (the dead giveaway)

Open Settings > Display & Brightness. Look for the True Tone toggle. On a genuine Apple OEM screen, it’ll be there and it’ll work — the screen will warm up and cool down as you flick it on and off. On a copy screen, the toggle is either missing entirely, greyed out, or shows an “Important Display Message” warning that the part isn’t recognised. This single check catches around 80% of fake screens.

2. The Brightness Test

Take the phone outside, into direct sunlight, and crank brightness to 100%. A genuine iPhone screen on iPhone 12 onwards hits 800–1,200 nits and stays comfortably readable in full sun. A copy screen will look dim, washed-out and reflective even at maximum. The difference is obvious within seconds — you shouldn’t be squinting at a real Apple display.

3. The Colour Accuracy Test

Open a pure white image (search “white screen” in Photos, or just open a blank Notes page). On a genuine display the white is clean, neutral and uniform across the panel. Copy screens almost always show a yellow, blue or pink cast — sometimes uneven from edge to edge. Then open a deep red and a deep black image: copies struggle with both, showing washed reds and grey-tinted blacks instead of true black.

4. The Touch Response Test

Open the keyboard and type fast. Try a swipe game. Pinch-to-zoom on a photo. A real Apple touch digitiser is glassy-smooth, registers every input, and tracks 3D Touch / Haptic Touch perfectly. Copy screens commonly show ghost taps, missed inputs at the edges, lag on multi-finger gestures, or a “rubbery” feel. If it doesn’t feel right under your thumb, it isn’t right.

5. The Oleophobic Coating Test

Run a finger across the screen. The original Apple panel has an oleophobic (oil-repelling) coating that feels slick and barely shows fingerprints — water beads up on it. Copy screens usually skip this coating to cut costs, so your finger will drag and the panel will smudge instantly. Hold it under a light at an angle and you’ll see fingerprints all over a copy screen where there wouldn’t be any on an original.

Quick Reference: Original vs Copy iPhone Screen

  • True Tone: Works on original / disabled or warning on copy
  • Peak brightness: 800–1,200 nits on original / 400–600 on copy
  • Whites: Neutral on original / yellow, blue or pink tint on copy
  • Touch: Smooth, accurate, 3D Touch works / ghost taps and edge issues on copy
  • Coating: Slick, water beads / drags, smudges instantly
  • Battery life: Unchanged on original / often noticeably worse on copy

Why It Matters

A copy screen isn’t just lower quality — it can cause Face ID to fail, drain battery faster, refuse iOS updates, and lose touch response over the first few months. Worse, fitting a non-genuine display sometimes voids any remaining Apple warranty and tanks your phone’s resale value by £80–£150.
